Compared to glycolic acid, mandelic acid has a higher molecular weight, which allows for slow penetration into the stratum corneum. This makes mandelic acid optimally tolerated; it does not cause irritation or itching like other AHAs. Mandelic acid is generally very well tolerated even by sensitive skin types. Mandelic acid acts as a biological exfoliator and also has excellent sebum-regulating, antibacterial, and antimicrobial properties. It is successfully used to treat large-pored, aging skin (photoaging), melasma, hyperpigmentation, acne vulgaris, rosacea, and folliculitis.
